Empty bucket

My bucket is empty
But how can that be
With a big bag of carrots
Not 12 feet from me?

They're tender and juicy
And sweet to the taste,
But when not in my bucket
Are going to waste.

So, do me a favour,
Please bring me a bunch,
And fill up my bucket
To hold me 'til lunch.

In case you haven't guessed it yet my main pre-occupation is eating. Whether a delicious carrot, or Timmie's cranberry, blueberry bran muffin, or a pile of early harvest hay or simply nosing through the lush summer grass, my life is food. Everything else is a trifle of diversion; a distraction from what's really important -- and that is, eating.

So, should we ever happen to meet, please come carrot-in-hand. I may love you forever. The way to this horse's heart is definitely through his stomach!

The Rain

In paddock soggy see me bide
I cannot wait to go inside.
As rain in buckets 'round me teems
Of hay and carrots I have dreams.

The drips and drops that fall on me
Dilute my pastoral reverie,
And to escape is my one wish
Before this horse becomes a fish.

Soon by the gate's my mother dear.
I call to her, "I'm over here!"
She comes to me all smiles and joy,
I really am a lucky boy!

A carrot treat she offers me
Which I accept most gratefully.
And to the barn I then am lead
Where it is warm and dry instead.

Then once inside she heaves a sigh --
I'm sopping wet from toe to eye.
She towels me off; I don't complain.
Just glad to be out of the rain.

How do you do?

My name is Shakespeare
How do you do?
I'm tall, dark and handsome;
How about you?

I live in the moment.
It seems to work best
While working and playing
And even at rest.

I love to eat carrots,
Write poetry too.
And play with my mother;
To mine self I'm true.

So join me here often,
I've so much to say.
But that's it for now, folks,
It's time to eat hay.

Stay tuned for the next exciting instalment of The Life and Times of Shakespeare "The Equine."
